The Allied Invasion by England and France.

This invasion

originated from a very trifling matter. It was merely owing

to the incident of the British boat Arrow and the murder of

a French priest that the British and French Imperialists

sent their allied troops to wage war against us. In 1857

they took Canton and Taku, and the Tientsin Treaties were

made. In 1860 they again attacked Tientsin and Peking, and

the Peking Treaty was enacted with the result that a portion

of Kowloon was ceded to England, an indemnity of $8,000,000

was paid to England and France, and Newch.ang, Chefoo,

Formosa, Chiu-chow, Tam Shui, King Chow, Nanking, Kiu-kiang,

Chin-kiang, Hankow and Tientsin were opened as commercial ports. Thus all the key positions of North Central and

South China became areas under the administration of

foreigner, and thus China suffered still greater loss. Invasion of the 8 Allies. This war was still more terrible, and England was the principal people concerned in it. The Boxers cherished a deep hatred against the foreign Imperialists for their cruel actions, and rose in opposition against them.

This led to the attack by the allied forces of

the 8 Powers an Peking, with the result that the unequal treaties of the San Tsau year (1901) were made, an indemnity

of 450,000,000 taels was to be paid and an area at Peking was granted for the erection of legations. Henceforth the Peking Government became subject to the influence of the Powers. The British Imperialists had also actually helped

the Manchu Government with arms and ammunition to suppress

the Tai Ping revolution. On the establishment of the Republic, the British Imperialists only recognized it on the condition that their aggressive policy against Tibet was accepted. Later they formed the Triple, Quadruple, Sextuple

and Fivefold consortiums, and made an economic invasion on

China on a large scale. England again proposed that any
